Coral blocks are solid blocks that come in five variations: tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn.

Dead Coral Blocks are the dead variants of Coral Blocks.

Obtaining

Coral Blocks can only be obtained with a Pickaxe enchanted with Touch of Silk; otherwise they will drop the respective dead coral block. Dead Coral Blocks can be obtained with any pickaxe.

Natural Generation

Coral Blocks and Dead Coral Blocks ‌ [Bedrock Edition only] are generated naturally in coral reef structures. These are found in warm oceans.

Uses

Coral blocks and their dead variants can be used as building blocks or decoration.

Dead coral blocks

For the coral blocks to stay alive, at least one of the surrounding blocks must be water. If placed out of the water, it will transform into its respective block of dead coral after a few seconds.

June 28 2010		Notch mentioned on his blog: "I tried adding corals, but it is really difficult to draw a single block that looks like corals as it really is more about insane amounts of variation and diversity. But I do know that corals will have tiny particles of fish around them. "

5 October 2012		The coral was shown in a fake snapshot created by 12marc40awesome, in a satirical image alongside the creature-shaped fish and "fish blocks".
November 18 2017		The Coral Block was shown in a MineCon Earth short. The horn, tube, fire coral block and its dead variants were shown (only one variant at a time) in the short along with coral slabs with their variants. .
1.13	18w09a	Added the block of coral, at that time it was simply called "coral" and its variants tube, brain, bubble, fire, horn were called blue, pink, purple, red and yellow respectively.

1.4	beta 1.2.14.2	Added the coral block. At this time, they could "die" if they only touched air blocks or vacuum blocks, this technically means that the coral did not need water to stay alive.

1.5	beta 1.5.0.4	Coral blocks no longer die if one side touches water.

Curiosities

In the Bedrock edition, the horn coral block has a different texture than Java. Meanwhile, the dead variant of this block is the same.

After players placed 10 million blocks of coral underwater in Bedrock Edition, Mojang donated $ 100,000 to The Nature Conservancy to protect and restore coral reefs around the world. [2]
