    Coral block

This article is about the solid block of coral. To see coral in non-solid plant form, see Coral. To see all types of corals, see Corals.

Coral blocks are solid blocks that come in five variations: tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn.

Dead Coral Blocks are the dead variants of Coral Blocks.

    Summary

    Obtaining

Coral Blocks can only be obtained with a Pickaxe enchanted with Touch of Silk; otherwise they will drop the respective dead coral block. Dead Coral Blocks can be obtained with any pickaxe.

    Natural Generation

Coral Blocks and Dead Coral Blocks ‌ [Bedrock Edition only] are generated naturally in coral reef structures. These are found in warm oceans.

    Uses

Coral blocks and their dead variants can be used as building blocks or decoration.

    Dead coral blocks

For the coral blocks to stay alive, at least one of the surrounding blocks must be water. If placed out of the water, it will transform into its respective block of dead coral after a few seconds.

21 May 2009Notch expresses interest in a suggestion about corals by user "solarblade".
    Java Edition Alpha
June 28 2010 Notch mentioned on his blog: "I tried adding corals, but it is really difficult to draw a single block that looks like corals as it really is more about insane amounts of variation and diversity. But I do know that corals will have tiny particles of fish around them. "
    Java Edition
5 October 2012The coral was shown in a fake snapshot created by 12marc40awesome, in a satirical image alongside the creature-shaped fish and "fish blocks".
November 18 2017The Coral Block was shown in a MineCon Earth short. The horn, tube, fire coral block and its dead variants were shown (only one variant at a time) in the short along with coral slabs with their variants. .
1.1318w09aAdded the block of coral, at that time it was simply called "coral" and its variants tube, brain, bubble, fire, horn were called blue, pink, purple, red and yellow respectively.
Added the dead coral, at that time it was called only like that and did not have any variant like the current one.

Like the block of coral, it was called blue, pink, purple, red, and yellow at the time, later called tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn.
18w10dAdded the coral reef allowing the natural generation of the coral blocks.
18in14bRenamed "coral" to coral block and "coral plant" to coral.
Renamed the blue, pink, purple, red, and yellow coral block and dead coral block variants to tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn
18w16aAdded that to obtain the block of coral when chopping it must be with a tool with a touch of silk.
Coral blocks now have a short delay before dying.
Coral blocks will no longer die if one side of them touches water.
1.13-pre6Living coral blocks now have new eventual sound effects: block.coral_block.break, block.coral_block.fall, block.coral_block.hit, block.coral_block.place, and block.coral_block.step.
