Ore blocks are collected primarily for crafting uses, such as making tools, weapons, and other items. Redstone dust is obtained from redstone ore, and is used to create redstone circuits. The refined mineral can also be combined to create a block of the type of material.

Most ores release their resource when mined, and require a silk touch pick to loosen.

• Coal, iron, gold, diamond, emerald, deep shale, and nether quartz ores drop 1 unit of their corresponding material.
• Copper ore and its deep shale variant release 2-3 units of crude copper.
• Redstone ore and its deep shale variant release 4–5 units of redstone dust.
• Lapis lazuli ore and its deep shale variant drop 4–9 ​​units of lapis lazuli.
• Nether gold ore drops 2–6 units of gold nuggets.
• Ancient rubble is the exception; loosens when mined and must be melted to obtain netherite shards.

Foundry ingredient

Ores melt faster using a blast furnace.

It is not efficient to silk touch and then melt a block of ore that normally drops multiple pieces of its resource, because melting these ores yields less experience and only 1 piece of the resource. Nether gold ore is the only exception.

Additional Uses

Refined Mineral Resources can be made into blocks for storage, recipes, or decoration. Carbon blocks and most mineral blocks are made by placing 9 of the refined material in a square. Nether Quartz is the only mineral block that only needs 4 items to be crafted.

All of the above block recipes are reversible, except for quartz and oxidized copper.

Iron and gold ingots can be turned into nuggets and vice versa.

Lapis lazuli can be made into a dye, or even used as one.

Netherite Shards, obtained by melting Ancient Debris, are used in conjunction with Gold Bars to create Netherite Ingots. This is the only mineral that is used in conjunction with another mineral to create an alloy.

The netherite ingots can be used on a smithy table to upgrade diamond items to netherite items. Data such as durability, enchantments, and custom names are preserved.

Availability

The following is the mineral distribution according to altitude (the layers are the number of blocks above the lowest layer of base stone) on the surface and the Nether. The highest layers in which you can find gold, redstone, diamond, and lapis lazuli are two layers lower. [1]

Since Java Edition 1.17 and Bedrock Edition 1.17.0, the mineral distribution is:

The Nether

1. ↑ This refers to blocks of coal ores that are generated in patches and not as part of fossils or mansions.
2. ↑ Instead of multi-block patches, emerald ore is placed in scattered blocks.
3. ↑ Deep slate variants only spawn on deep slate patches between layers 0 and 16.
4. ↑ Unlike most other ores, lapis lazuli frequency peaks around layer 15 and slowly tapers up and down.
5. ↑ Deep Slate variants only replace Deep Slate and Tuff.
6. ↑ Nether Quartz is generated equally in all parts of the Nether.
7. ↑ Unlike most other minerals, the frequency of ancient debris peaks at layer 15 and rapidly decreases above and below.

Trivia

• Ancient debris has two forms of being generated, similar to gold ore.
• Since it is unique to a single surface biome, emerald ore is actually rarer than ancient debris by chunk.
